SEVENTEEN

Climbing down the tree in a dress and heels was hard enough, but Brooke would’ve been in much worse shape had Jackson not caught her when she lost her footing.

“You’re good?” he asked, carrying her effortlessly.

“Guys, there you are!” Noah’s voice came from around the corner.

Jackson lowered Brooke to her feet as they turned to Noah. She cleared her throat.

“What happened?” he asked.

“No one knows for sure, but they think it might’ve been the equipment for the music,” Noah replied. “There was a loud electric sound, then the stage was set ablaze, catching the curtains and all the decorations on the walls.”

“Oh my word.” Brooke clutched her chest. “Has everyone made it out?”

“I don’t know. We should go join the group. They’re gathering everyone in the football field to take a count.”

“Take count?” Jackson echoed. “By the time they realize someone is missing, they’ll be dead.”

“What are you saying?” Brooke asked.

“I’m saying…” He turned to Noah, then pointed to the building. “You can look through these walls and know if someone is still in there.”

“And then what?” Noah asked. “It’s not like there’s anything we can do. The fire department hasn’t even arrived yet.”

“But at least we can tell them when they come.”

Noah shook his head. “I think it’s best if we just go to the football field and do what we’re told—”

“Noah…” Brooke pleaded. “If there’s anything we can do to help, we should.”

Noah locked his eyes with hers for a moment. “Alright, fine.”

He turned toward the building and squinted.

The strong smell of smoke burned Brooke’s nostrils and she covered her nose with the sleeve of Jackson’s suit jacket.

“There is someone in there…” Noah muttered, keeping his eyes fixed on the wall. “Two people… they’re in a closet.”

“A closet?” Brooke echoed.

“Where?” Jackson asked.

“In the gym, behind the makeshift stage.”

Brooke gasped. “That’s where the fire started. They’re never gonna make it out in time!”

“It’s Gwen!” Noah jerked back, hitting his back against the tree. He blinked and blinked, holding his head as if the world was spinning. Brooke grabbed his arm to steady him.

“Gwen’s in there!” Noah shot his eyes open and looked at Jackson. “She won’t make it out in time.”

Jackson took off running toward the side door of the school.

“Jackson, wait!” Brooke called out.

Noah grabbed her arms, sweat dripping down his face.

“Noah, you’re draining,” she said, helping him to the ground. “You need an IV. Get your phone and call my uncle.”

When she tried to stand, he grabbed her arm and pulled her back down. “Where are you going?”

“Call him.”

Brooke freed herself from his weak grip, then darted after Jackson. It wasn’t difficult to find him. All she had to do was follow the mangled doors leading all the way to the back entrance of the locker room. The smell of smoke growing stronger the closer she got to the gym.

“Jackson!” Brooke called out just as he was about to rip yet another door off its hinge. “Stop that.”

She hovered her hand above the lock and it clicked open.
